Favorite Superbowl Performances of the Past

If you are a fan of American football, then you know that the Super Bowl is the biggest event in American sports, not to mention one of the biggest events in entertainment. Every year, the halftime show is one of the most highly-anticipated parts of the game, with some of the biggest names in music taking the stage to perform. Over the years, there have been some truly incredible Super Bowl halftime performances, like The Weeknd and Justin Timberlake, but today, we’re going to take a look at some of our personal favorites.

Michael Jackson (1993) – Super Bowl XXVII

When it comes to Super Bowl halftime performances, it’s hard to top the King of Pop. Long before stars like Katy Perry flew through the stadium on a shooting star, or Lady Gaga jumped from the roof into the stadium for her performance, Michael Jackson would pop up not once, but twice on the jumbotrons and the out of the center of the stage like a magician to deliver the most iconic halftime shows of all time. While he my have had the smallest number of songs in his show, they all helped tell a story, a story of hope, love and peace. His performance would open with “Billie Jean” and would go on to include “Black or White,” followed by “We Are The World,” and would conclude with “Heal the World.” The show would include thousands of children and adults joining him on the field and holding hands while a large globe inflated right in the center. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that hasn’t shed a tear while watching this halftime show. It truly is most “iconic” Super Bowl halftime show of all time.

Madonna (2012) – Super Bowl XLVI

No stranger to big theatrical performances, it should come as no surprise that when Madonna took to the stage in 2012 at Super Bowl XLVI, she would deliver one of the most entertaining halftime shows in recent memory. Like the true goddess she is, Madonna was delivered to the stage on a chariot pulled by dozens of men dressed as warriors, while singing the opening to her hit song “Vogue.” Once on stage, the star would blast through her catalogue of hits “Music,” “Give Me All Your Luvin” (fest. Nicki Minaj & M.I.A.),” and “Sexy and I Know It w/ LMFAO). She would conclude this monumental performance with hints of “Open Your Heart” and “Express Yourself,” before bringing down the house with “Like a Prayer (feat. CeeLo Green.” As one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows of all time, it’ll be hard to beat.

Prince (2007) – Super Bowl XLI

As one of the biggest names in music, Prince is no stranger to huge sellout performances. So it comes as no surprise that we see the artist on a list of most memorable Halftime show performances. Not even a little South Florida rain storm could keep this performer from doing what he does best. So, in 2007, Prince would  take to the stage at Super Bowl XLI and deliver one of the best shows of his career. The show opened with him rising from the center of the love symbol (now his name) stage during a rain storm to perform  six of his greatest hits, from the opening number “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Proud Mary,” “Best of You,” and ending with “Purple Rain.” Let’s be honest though, the stage illuminating in purple during the finale song, and playing with the Florida A&M Marching 100, is what makes this one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows of all time.

Bruce Springsteen (2009) – Super Bowl XLIII

In 2009, the Bridgestone sponsored Super Bowl XLIII brought to the stage Bruce Springsteen and the legendary E Street Band, who delivered one of the most energetic halftime shows of all time. While many were hoping for him play some of his biggest hits, like “Born in the USA,” “Human Touch,” and “Dancing in the Dark,” he surprised everyone by opening with “10th Avenue Freeze-Out.” From there, he would  would then go on to perform a medley of some of his other biggest hits, including “Born to Run,” “Working on a Dream,” and “Glory Days.” Throughout the performance, Bruce would go on to bring an energy to the crowd so engaging that it had people dancing in the aisles and throughout the night, long after the performance was done.

Beyoncé (2013) Super Bowl XLVII

To end our list, we take a look at the Super Bowl XLVII from 2013. This year saw the true Queen B herself, Beyoncé, take the stage and deliver what is probably one of the most iconic halftime shows of all time. The show opened with a throng of fans running for the stage where Beyoncé would open the show with her hit single “Crazy in Love”. After this performance, she would go on to perform a medley of her biggest hits, including “Irreplaceable,” “Halo, ” and the real crowd pleaser of the night, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) featuring Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. At the end of the night, the performance was a huge success and is still considered one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows of all time.

These are just a few of our favorite Super Bowl halftime performances of the past. Each one of these performances was unique in its own way and each one was a huge success. Whether it’s a pop star or a rock legend, the Super Bowl halftime show is always a can’t-miss event.
