Ahsoka takes place after the fall of the Empire. Former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.
Starring Rosario Dawson as the titular Ahsoka, the series also features Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla.
Along with David Filoni in key creative leadership, Ahsoka boasts a very talented creative team. Executive Producers include Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, and Carrie Beck. Karen Gilchrist is co-executive producer. The directing team includes Steph Green, Peter Ramsey, Jennifer Getzinger, Geeta Vasant Patel,
Rick Famuyiwa.
Who is Ahsoka Tano?
Despite not being from the original Star Wars films or prequels, Ahsoka Tano is now a pillar to the Lucasfilm cinematic universe, nonetheless. Introduced in the poorly received Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie, Ahsoka was able to grow in the subsequent animated spin off series.
Ahsoka Tano was introduced Anakin’s mentee. Her character in The Clone Wars animated series was a very impulsive fighter, with the tendency to bring out the light saber first, and ask questions later. However, paired with Anakin’s more disciplined nature, the two made an effective team, working off of each other’s strengths.
The Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series ended up exceeding expectations. It not only made the clones sympathetic and more fleshed out, but it expanded the richness of the world of the prequel films.
The Clone Wars became one of Cartoon Network’s highest rated shows during it’s initial run. Despite it’s rough start, The Clone Wars animated series ended up playing a vital role. It bridged the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
A Familiar Face Behind the Scenes
Dave Filoni is very exciting to see leading the production of the series. Filoni was the team lead for the acclaimed Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series that Ahsoka is based on. Bringing back Filoni shows Disney’s commitment to continuity. Furthermore, it’s bringing forth the creative vision that made fans fall in love with the series back in 2008.
Along with The Clone Wars, Filoni has also had his hand in many other Star Wars projects including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Prior to his work with Lucasfilm, Filoni worked as a storyboard artist and/or assistant director for various animated series. This includes King of the Hill and Avatar: the Last Airbender.
After Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Wars: The Clone Wars was effectively cancelled. It was seen too graphic for Disney’s brand, and received a truncated 6th season. However, a loud fan campaign ended up saving the series.
After the launch of Disney+, the media giant ceded to fan demand. This created an opportunity for Dave Filoni and his team to show the finale they’d spent years building up.
A creative vision backed by fan demand so strong it not brought the animated series back for a proper finale in 2020 but also created a jumping off point for a spin off focused on a newer character is no small feat. With a stellar cast and Filoni helming the creative team, things bode well for Ahsoka. Time will only tell how the series actually fares.
Ahsoka takes off on Disney+ with a two-episode series premiere Wednesday, August 23.
